What did you do this past week?

This week I finished projects for other classes, and attended lecture for this one. I tried extra hard to pay attention and retain the information the first time as opposed to trying to learn it all later.

What’s in your way?

Nothing! Luckily I was able to get my other projects done a little bit earlier than normal and take a short break from school this weekend. I’m ready to hit the ground running for phase 5 as well as the rest of this semester!

What will you do next week?

Next week I will work on refactoring the frontend, implementing model comparison, and just making everything prettier overall.

If you read it, what did you think of The New Methodology?

I thought this was a fun read. It did a good job explaining the difference between traditional methodologies for engineering and why they don’t transfer well to software engineering, and provided some good alternatives using agile. It was cool to learn about how business and software come together and what it takes for a team to develop useful software for a customer.

What was your experience of SQL? (this question will vary, week to week)

I LOVED learning about SQL. I had never used it before, but it pretty easy to pick up and kinda fun too — every query is like a little puzzle and I really enjoyed the hackerrank exercises in class this week.

What made you happy this week?

I’m very happy that the projects in my other CS classes were easier than usual this week. I was ready to spend this weekend grinding and trying to get them done, but was able to get them done earlier than expected. As a result I was able to spend this weekend catching up with friends and watching some Christmas movies and generally relaxing. It was a much needed opportunity to reset in the middle of this particularly rough semester.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

Blue light blocking glasses. I started wearing my glasses more often recently (as opposed to my contact lenses), and they have that tech shield stuff in them to protect your eyes from blue light. There’s been a considerable difference in how tired I feel at the end of the day, and I bet a lot of it has to do with the strain that I used to put on my eyes, especially in this virtual world. Amazon has a lot of options for non prescription blue light blocking glasses for really low prices, and I definitely believe they are worth trying out!
